Girlstories Leadership Theatre was chosen among more than 400 nominees and 50 finalists, and is one of only 15 programs nationwide to receive the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award - and the only program to be recognized in the southeast U.S.
Presented by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the award honors community-based after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs for children with great potential but limited outlets for creative expression and growth.
The Girlstories Leadership Theatre programs are designed for middle school girls between the ages of 10 - 13 who are at a critical crossroads in their development. Through theatre arts, this program teaches the girls how to honor and speak their personal story - and share those stories in performances to elementary school girls - increasing their confidence, communications skills and self-esteem.
Congratulations to all our supporters, volunteers, program participants and teachers who believe in the Powerstories mission of staging true stories to open minds and hearts and inspire action worldwide!

We won! We won! Girlstories Leadership Theatre was notified of being a semi-finalist in the 2010 Coming Up Taller Awards to be presented by the President's Committee of the Arts and Humanities. We found out recently that we WON! (see the above announcement). The award is now called the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award...and we just retured from the WHITE HOUSE to receive it!
Girlstories Leadership Theatre began this year on June 17, 2010. Twenty two amazing middle school girls have been selected. They have built a show on Mother Earth titled The Might M.E. Mission and have performed for many schools already. Their target audience is the elementary school youth. More performing to come.
Girlstories is an important part of Powerstories Theatre, founded in 1998 by Executive Director, Fran Powers. Director Janice Nepon-Sixt leads this innovative program that partners with existing social services agencies serving at-risk 10-17 year old girls. Our workshops use creative discovery techniques, dramatics, storytelling, writing and art activities to help these girls communicate more effectively, and to tell their own stories with confidence.
Girlstories Theatre Project- Dreamed of for years, this program officially started in November, 2007. Middle school girls from diverse backgrounds attend a six-week summer drama intensive to prepare them to perform for the general public and elementary school groups during the year. In addition to an in depth theatre curriculum, the project serves as the impetus to talk about important issues and to educate girls about achieving their goals and dreams. While working on individual self-esteem, the girls also work on team building activities to form a cohesive, effective group. At the end of the summer a one-hour play with four sections is created by staff and students. Janice Creneti is the director, and she is joined by a talented staff of specialists. Curriculum has been developed to be used in conjunction with the performances at schools.
